I visited MAM on January 10th, 2016
The piece that impacted me the most was Hunger by Kollwitz. Looking at the piece I immediately felt sorrow and pain. A skeletal woman appears to be crying, covering her eyes, holding what looks to be a lifeless skeletal baby. The image is small, simple, not extremely detailed, and is in black and white. It seems so simple, but it really has an impact that speaks to the audience on another level. I believe this image was created by means of block printing. I believe this art work was created to share a message of how hunger was affecting the people, how it affected the children and mothers. I would like to make a series of block prints that have the look of Kollwitz. |
R&R Art Galleries
I went to R&R Galleries on May 4th, 2016.
One of the pieces that caught my eye was "A Tree for all Season" by Nancy Justus. It was made out of fabric and yarn. When I first saw it I immediately thought of the impressionist movement. There is a distinct, brown, tree form, surrounded by a variety of pink fabrics pieces randomly arranged on and overlapped to create a indistinct background. It is not captured well in the photograph, but with the pink fabrics in the background, ornate, silver stitched organic swirls cover every square inch. I believe the artist wanted the audience to appreciate nature in an unrealistic way. It would be interesting to incorporate fabrics and sewing into one of my pieces. Of course, that would mean that I would have to learn how to sew first. |
Reagan IB Visual Arts Gallery
When I first saw Summertime Sadness by Martha Gonzalez I was immediately brought back to my childhood. Her art style reminded me of Holly Black's who illustrated The Spiderwick Chronicles. I also felt the sadness that the artist wanted to express. Despite not seeing the face of the figure, one can sense the emotion, meaning the artist had created a powerful illustration. I believe the artist created this work to express a moment of difficulty in the figure's life. I would like to develop my illustration style to the point where it is similar to her's.
